~~Stone Facts~~
Amber
Over 40 million years ago in Northern Europe, resin from pine trees fossilized becoming what we know today as Baltic amber. Amber has been a valuable source to paleontologists, as the amber often contains perfectly preserved plants or insects from millions of years ago. In Tibet, amber is valued as pure gold. Baltic amber is mined in Lithuania, Poland, Sicily, Burma, Mexico, Japan and Dominican Republic. Over millions of years, amber has become submerged under the sea and will become dislodged during a storm. In the medieval period, amber floating in the sea was gathered in nets and traded or used for fine jewelry. A treasured lump of amber might wash up on a beach in England or Denmark today.
Amber also exhibits strong static electricity, and our word electron comes from the Greek word for amber electrum. Amber is considered a very soft “stone” and will actually burn if exposed to high temperatures (over 392 F). Because of its potentially flammable properties, it was named “Bernstein” in Germany, which literally translates to “burning stone”. Amber varnish is created from the oil residue left after the amber has been burned. The amber is a transparent golden yellow, or yellow-red, and can have milky or foamy white effects within. When rubbed, or exposed to gentle heat, amber will produce a piney, resinous smell.
